Airsoft game modes

Most airsoft games are built from a few modes. Here is how each one works, and what an organizer needs to run it.

Team deathmatch

Two sides, a time limit and respawns at each side's base. The side with the most players left, or the fewest respawns used, wins. It is the simplest mode and a good start for new players.

Domination and capture points

The field has several points, each an area or a flag. A side takes a point by holding it, and the side holding more points, or holding them longer, wins. When players from two sides are at the same point, it is contested until one side is left.
In GridStrike, organizers can set a point to GPS capture: when only one side's players are inside its area, that side takes it, and the live map shows the point contested while sides share it.

Capture the flag

Each side defends its own flag and tries to bring the other side's flag home. Rounds are short and fast, and they reward speed and teamwork more than holding ground.

Attack and defend

One side holds a building or an area; the other has to take it within a time limit, usually with more respawns. The sides swap roles in the next round.

VIP escort

One side moves a player, the VIP, from one point to another; the other side tries to stop them. The VIP is often unarmed or can take only a few hits.

MilSim operations

Long games, from several hours to a whole weekend, with a scenario, a chain of command, limited respawns and objectives that open as the game goes on. Organizers plan factions, squads and the field in advance.

What to know

Which mode suits new players?

Team deathmatch and domination: the rules are short, the rounds are clear and new players can stay close to their team.

How do organizers keep track of capture points?

With a referee at each point, radios or an app. In GridStrike each objective shows who holds it on everyone's live map, and staff can set the holder or decide capture requests.

Can we mix modes in one day?

Yes. Most game days run several rounds, each with its own mode; organizers announce them at the briefing.
